GTA 6 Isn’t Using Generative AI, According to Take-Two. Here’s Why That Matters.

Take-Two says generative AI has no role in what Rockstar is building for GTA 6. Here is what that statement means for creative control, game AI and smaller developers.

A convincing city takes more than buildings. It takes a reason to turn down the next street.

Generating something that resembles an open world is one challenge. Making that world worth playing is another. In a February 2026 GamesIndustry.biz interview, reported by GameSpot, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said: “Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building” with GTA 6.

That is the company’s public account of its approach, rather than an independent audit of every development tool.

What no generative AI actually means

Generative AI produces content such as text, images, voices, video or code. Conventional game AI covers systems such as navigation, enemy decisions and reactions to player behavior. Those categories should not be mixed together.

Zelnick also described broad AI use elsewhere at Take-Two in the same interview. The publisher’s statement about GTA 6 should not be expanded into a claim that the entire company rejects AI.

A city needs creative decisions

Think about a memorable chase. The road gives you room to accelerate. An intersection forces a decision. A narrow escape route rewards attention. A landmark tells you where you are.

Those moments depend on relationships between geography, controls, cameras, missions and player expectations. A beautiful street can still be boring to drive through. A crowded neighborhood can still feel empty if nothing responds meaningfully.

Our editorial reading: the value of authorship lies in people deciding how those pieces work together and revising them until the experience holds up.

This does not settle the AI debate

GTA 6’s approach does not prove generative AI has no useful role in development. A small team might use it to explore visual directions, prototype ideas or create material it later replaces.

Generated assets still need consistent scale, coherent lighting, usable animation, working collisions and acceptable performance. Human-authored work faces the same test: authorship alone cannot guarantee an enjoyable game.

The lesson for smaller developers

Protect creative control. Know why a location exists and what an enemy adds to an encounter. Make movement feel good before expanding the map. Test whether a mission is enjoyable before surrounding it with more scenery.

A finished block with satisfying movement and meaningful interactions can demonstrate more than miles of unfinished city. Tools help teams produce more; teams still decide what deserves to stay.

What GTA 6 will ultimately be judged on

Take-Two puts human creative work at the center of GTA 6’s identity. The finished experience must support that commitment through writing, performances, world design and gameplay.

The strongest argument will be streets players remember, characters they care about and decisions that make them want to keep playing.
